In 2020 the cdc reported that 45,979 people die of suicide every year.
That equals out to roughly 1 death every 11 minutes.
That means that by the time we leave here tonight 11 people will have taken their lives.

This is not a humorous poem.
This is a tribute to those swallowed by the thoughts swirling through their heads.
This is for those begging for help whose words were swallowеd by the stigma.
This is not me telling you that you can’t bе depressed.
That your family is too nice.
Or your grades are too good.
This is a cry for help. A call to speak.

This is me taking my silence and breaking it like they broke my will to live.
This is teaching the next generation to speak and speak LOUD

This is ten year olds in psych wards begging;
Not to be let out but for some actual help.
Too often we are shackled by our shame
By our fear
Too often we hide in the dark allies

Depression is not always a siren,
setting off red flags
We do not wear it openly
We do not own neon signs screaming at you
It is a silent slippery snake sliding through the cracks
just barely out of reach
Suicide is not a permanent solution to a temporary problem
This problem is rarely temporary.

It is wanting to rest after years of insomnia.
It is longing for safety and calm.
It is careful planning
Or triggered panic
Or a completely random thought in the back of your mind.
It is drawing a target in between your eyes
It is cutting out imperfections
Sometimes these things are sudden.
And sometimes they are not.

This is not a humerous poem.
It is tornado sirens blaring in your ears that you block out
It is ignoring the beep of a microwave
Or the screech of a tea kettle.
It is you ignoring us when we tell you that we are suicidal.

How much noise must we make?
How many of us must die before you believe us?

This is not weakness.
This is saying that we have been fighting but we are tired now.
This is fists bruised and broken and us having only one thing to fight with left.
We are using our voices.
It’s time for you to listen.
I have written many versions of my suicide note throughout the years.
Before I try to take my life I always delete it or crumple it up
Best to go in silence then bother people with all that fuss
Thousands of us are dying in silence.
And that silence is why this is not a humorous poem
This is an attempt to scream louder
Then all the signs you ignored.
