I saw Bethlehem
In the burned out ruins
Of an East side adobe church
Warmed my hands on Houston Street
Watched the day give birth
Made my bed in a doorway
Under a neon sign
Electric six foot letters
Blinking in my mind
There's something for everybody
Something for young and old
The streets are filled with money
The sidewalks paved in gold
Picked up yesterday's newspaper
I went down to apply for a job
The superintendent got crazy
Chased me away with his dog
Bearded and wrinkled
I could stand it no more
I pulled out a water pistol
And squirted his door
I ran down the street
With a big dog at my feet
There's something for everybody
Something for young and old
The streets are filled with money
The sidewalks paved in gold
Unemployment sent me to welfare
Welfare demanded some proof
I was so drunk
I couldn't even remember my name
I tried, but it ain't no use
An El Dorado roared blindly by
Leopard glass packs tore the sky
An ancient old lady
Heard the news and cried
And there's something for everybody
Something for young and old
The streets are filled with money
The sidewalks paved in gold
