Billy wasn’t all but a small town kid
But he loved to play his guitar
And the people who saw his peakin day
Would come there and far
Billy had heard the whispers saying
This could come play real good
When they asked him how he did it
He said it’s just in my blood
He blamed you
Billy had been the first to admit he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed
And his teachers, they would ask him if he had anything in his head
It would seem that they missed a part
Yes, there was one thing they didn’t know
Oh he didn’t know much about decimal points
But he could sure put on a show
Every week day after school
It’s off to the little cool ball
Through the hordes of drinkers and smoking joints
There would be a smoking guitar
Everybody knew that corner
Was where billy ran the show
Just one look at his flying hands
And you’d never want to go
One dark night at smokey’s
Well billy was on fire
I found the shell and something mine went black
And billy didn’t mind
He said somewhere he sees 7:20, it’s time
It can’t be in this dive
I know people at the top of the tree
Can bring your careers alive
Billy, he went back that night
And he stared straight at the stars
I’m really gonna spend the rest of my life
Playing tech and string low key bars
So he picked up his guitar beside him and began
To play like never before
And the tune ran out so crisp and clear
Even the stars were screaming for more
Billy never once considered moving out of town
He owed it to the place where the love of his music could be found
The lowgrounds may be simplicity is gold
And billy was the golden kid who really broke the mold
So the next time you ever find yourself
In a smokey dodge far
Bought you a check at dockie’s corner
Just in case it’s a smoking guitar
But if you’ll ever set your eyes on the boy
Who never sold out
You can bet your boots that’s you
Who’ll never wanna go without
