there are wide rivers and there are highways between us
and i miss you the most at night when i sleep
the lights of the city burn brightly on the horizon
the road falls away like stars beneath my feet
my tires, they hum on the darkening pavement
it sounds in my ears like the blood in your veins
there are no angels whose company i prefer
these lessons we learn under gas station lights
there are broad skies and great distances between us
the wind bears me home like blossoms in a storm
there is no place more welcome to my eyes
than highway 40 through east tennessee
green valleys and hours separate us
i dream as i drive of lying in your rest
i stop just over the tennessee border
and I walk around to try and stay awake
the air is cool, somewhere i hear water
i can feel the dew and it’s barely midnight
when I get home the house is dark and silent
i take a moment and watch you sleep
i lay myself down beside you
you are salvation against the cold night
but when i sleep i dream of green valleys
and highway 40 through east tennessee
