Talking about some hard times
Now listen to me
I grew up in a shotgun shack
Drew water from a well that we dug out back
Mama cooked our supper on a cast iron stove
Daddy listened to Hank on the old radio
The cracks in the wall let the wind blow through
While Hank sung a chorus of the Love Sick blues
Now the times was hard but we didn't complain
But when you're down on your luck it'll damn sure rain
It was hot in the summer
Cold in the winter
And we always seemed to have beans for dinner
Hard times caused a lot of hunger and pain
When you're down on your luck, it'll damn sure rain
It'll rain sometimes
Lord
Talkin' 'bout hard times
Listen
We had an old hound dog that slept on the porch
Hunted 'coons at night with a pine knot torch
We cut a lot of timber for the old saw mill
We chopped a lot of cotton, and we plowed in the fields
Drove a wagon into town to the General Store
We went to a church that had a stick board floor
Now the times was hard but we didn't complain
But when you're down on your luck it'll damn sure rain
It was hot in the summer
Cold in the winter
And we always seemed to have beans for dinner
Hard times caused a lot of hunger and pain
When you're down on your luck, it'll damn sure rain
Oh, it will rain sometimes
It was hard times
I remember it will
I remember it well, that brush front yard
Daddy killin' them hogs mama boilin' that lard
That kerosene lamp, how it glowed in the night
The smell of that mule grime about daylight
I can see it right now at the shotgun shack
Daddy drawin' water from the well out back
Well that time was hard but we didn't complain
When you're down on your luck, it'll damn sure rain
It was hot in the summer
Cold in the winter
And we always seemed to have beans for dinner
Hard times caused a lot of hunger and pain
When you're down on your luck, it'll damn sure rain
