No overcast skies that day did mark
No sign at all of the tragedy stark
Waiting in the wings,
As the gay bird sings
Unaware, melodiously in the park
But let me at the beginning start
And also explain my better half’s part
In the sordid case
Which took place
At the Azaiba Safeer Mart
We were busy shopping for greens
When suddenly out of the blue it seems
The daughter I sired
Expressed her desire
To indulge in her non-vegetarian dreams
I pulled myself to the required height
As I contemplated this unheard of slight
To the vegetarian line
Of ancestors mine
Being threatened by a sacrilegious blight
One look at my wife’s beatific face
And I know wherefrom the issue had surfaced
I thereafter proceeded
And hopefully succeeded
In espousing the merits of a vegetarian race
(to my daughter)
“Chicken, fish, mutton and meat
Are things that we do not eat,
be so kind
to keep this in mind
And I shall reward you with a (veggie) treat”
“But what of the eggs you have” – my wife cried
With a wave I brushed her words aside
“What of filial piety?
And my deep anxiety
In ensuring that I by the norms abide ?”
“Eggs are veg”, I further explained
And marvelled, at the way I had trained
My daughter and my wife
To live their life
In the manner in which I ordained
Which brings me back to where I started
For a few minutes their company I parted
And returned to see
My daughters glee
And realised that I’ve been outsmarted
“What did you just have ?!” I cry horrified
(I take a deep breath to let the panic subside)
A look at her eyes
And I realise,
My folly, and something wilts inside
“Nothing non-vegetarian dad
Just a couple of nuggets I had”
My stomach turned
and I discerned
The futility of my attempt so mad
Thoroughly chastened I surrender,
And realise the monumental blunder
Underestimated my wife
Story of my life
And had my dreams casually torn asunder
No premonition did I get, no portent
Not a single sign did the good lord send
On hindsight
It seems right
That my delusions of power came to an end
