As the old god dies a new god is born.
Young and hungry and more oppressive than before.
The people love their new god, and spread his word across the earth.
And in the name of freedom they build an empire of fear.
“Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice.” – Sen. Barry Goldwater
Trampled by horses. Blasted by cannons.
Cut apart by a bayonet charge.
Riddled with bullets. Choking on poison.
Face down with their limbs blown off.
Pounded by rockets. Buried in rubble.
Shot to death by a firing squad.
Burning in napalm. Gutted by land mines.
Imprisoned and left to rot.
One by one the millions fall. And the gods command it all.
Blistering flesh in the ovens.
Buried in mass graves.
Stole away in the middle of the night
and never seen again.
Watching their loved ones die,
and raped defiled and burned.
In a church asking why,
when a bomb goes off inside.
One by one the millions fall. And the gods demand it all.
From the walls of the Bastille to the palace of the Czar.
From the foot of Bunker Hill to the throne of the Kaiser.
From the dungeons to the gulags. From Auschwitz to the Trail of tears.
From Nanking to Hiroshima. God’s will is done.
The people tremble as the armies march. Conquest is called liberation.
Members of the resistance are found and crushed. They brought it upon themselves.
We shall teach them to be free. Indoctrination is called education.
A new world order of lasting peace, that is what we all desire.
But you must earn your freedom with hard work and sacrifice.
Prove that you are worthy and we shall grant you rights.
Renounced the ways of your old god and embrace the new.
This is the people’s nation and we will tell you what to do.
If you want to live in peace...
You shall kneel before the God of Freedom.
“Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom
must undergo the fatigue of supporting it.” – Thomas Paine
Fight and die for the God of Freedom.
“The tree of liberty must be replenished with the blood of patriots.” – Thomas Jefferson
Pay your tribute to the God of Freedom.
“The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” – Thomas Jefferson
Be enslaved to the God of Freedom.
“The cause of freedom is the cause of god.” – Samuel Bowles
And obey his law.
Another hungry god tries to devour the earth.
It’s followers more voracious than the last.
Both sides push each other to a more brutal extreme.
And in the wars and resistance the suffering festers and grows.
The gods promise salvation, but none can deliver for long.
And when the suffering becomes unbearable, life goes for naught.
