Nearly four years ago, AGNES, ASAMI, and LARISSA participated in the Global Vocal Battle Auditions to find the next pop sensation from Japanese entertainment powerhouse, LDH JAPAN. Impressing the international panel of judges, including world-renowned producer AFROJACK, these three girls were hand-picked to become the next stars of the J-Pop industry. Finally, it is time for SWEET REVENGE to make their mark on the world! On Junе 21, the group officially debuted with thе dynamic single “Might Just.”
In this exclusive interview conducted by Genius Japan, the SWEET REVENGE members open up about their lives pre-debut, working with The Stereotypes, their latest release, and so much more.
── Thank you for taking the time to chat with us at Genius Japan! Can we start with a quick introduction from each member?
AGNES: Hi! I’m AGNES, I am half Dutch and half Guinean. I grew up in Holland in a very musical home where music was played every day. I believe that being an artist is a way of living and seeing the world. The only way I can fully express myself and take in all the human experience we get on this earth is through art, so being an artist is all I have ever known to be.
ASAMI: I'm ASAMI, a member of SWEET REVENGE, and I’m fully Japanese. I speak both English and Japanese, and I’ve been training to become an artist from 14 years old. I’ve always loved old-school hip-hop/R&B music, and as I started training, my love for performing grew. I auditioned for this group because I wanted to become a global artist and experience music internationally.
LARISSA: Hi, I’m LARISSA! I am very excited to show you everyone what we’ve been working on and can’t wait for SWEET REVENGE to take over the world!
── Your group was originally announced back in 2020, and now you are finally debuting! How do you think that training and preparing for the last four years has helped you develop as artists before releasing your first official track?
AGNES: A lot! We had so many ups and downs, and it was definitely not easy, but I am really proud of how we stuck through and didn’t give up. Every fallback was meant to happen to make us stronger and more prepared for our debut. I’m also glad we went through a lot while we hadn’t debuted yet because we were able to deal with it ourselves without many eyes on us. It made us discover who we are in a lot of ways, which made us grow as people and made us better artists.
ASAMI: A lot of changes happened after the announcement and it wasn’t all good, but having the training and preparation for our debut really helped us to grow as a group and individuals. The more tough times we experienced together made us stronger and tougher as a group. I appreciate the four years in the making because we were able to build a solid base before our debut.
LARISSA: I'm so grateful for all the training and experiences we’ve had before our debut! It was a tough and challenging journey but a necessary one! It’s so special that we can finally show you what we’ve been preparing for.
── Last year, it was revealed that the famous songwriter Jonathan Yip of The Stereotypes' music production team would act as your producer. What was it like working with someone who has created major hits for artists such as Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, and other girl groups like Fifth Harmony and even Red Velvet?
AGNES: Jon is the best! He has really been a mentor to me. I would talk to him a lot when we were going through some tough times, and he always knew how to give me a different perspective and the best advice! Once, when it was really hard for me to hold on to something and I almost stopped believing in this dream, he told me a story about how he and The Stereotypes once were in a similar place we were, but he told me, “Just don’t give up! 90% of the people who didn’t realize their dreams gave up. Something great will come your way as long as you don’t give up.” That always stuck with me.
ASAMI: Jon and all the guys from The Stereotypes are definitely a BIG part of SWEET REVENGE. And Jon, especially, has been watching us the longest, and I’ve learned so much from him. I trust him and I think we are very blessed to have a great bond and relationship with all the guys!! Also hanging with Jon and the guys is such a fun time, they just liven up the place!!
LARISSA: It's so special that we get to learn from Jon and The Stereotypes and to just be around them! Jon really taught me so much over the years and being in the studio with them is always an incredible experience. I feel so lucky to be able to experience that! We love our music so much because they are sooo good at what they do!
── In the music video for your new song "Might Just," each one of you guys has an adorable animated digital avatar! Can you describe your reactions seeing your virtual selves for the first time?
AGNES: I loved it so much! I was so amazed about how great it looked. Ayaka-san (Ayaka Ohira) really did amazing designing our avatars, she killed my afro! Seeing them move in the music video made me even more excited! I never thought I would have my own digital avatar, so I am just super grateful and very obsessed with them!
ASAMI: KAWAIIIII!!!! I’ve never thought that I would have my own avatar. The first time I saw the drawing, I couldn’t believe it. And with everything coming together, watching the avatars dance and being in the MV made our debut and “Might Just” single much more special!
LARISSA: I still remember seeing them for the first time! Ayaka Ohira-san is incredible, and she really made our dreams come true with these avatars! We really love them and use them for everything, even our phone lock screens!
── We heard that you had to wear motion-capture bodysuits to record and track the choreography for the music video! What was that experience like?
AGNES: Unfortunately, me, and LARISSA didn’t get to do it. We were in Holland at that time, so only ASAMI did it.
ASAMI: It was definitely an interesting experience to wear the motion capture suits and be surrounded by so many cameras, but the LDH digital team that we filmed with was super nice! My nervousness was gone, and I had a really fun time dancing! Afterwards when watching the avatars dance and in the exact same way I did, I was very happy to see the personalities also come through from the movements.
LARISSA: When AGNES and I were back in Holland for a little bit, ASAMI went into the studio and had to remember all 3 of our parts so that the Digital team could work on the avatars as soon as possible because that of course takes a lot of time, work, and effort! ASAMI absolutely killed it, and the Digital team absolutely killed it. It’s so amazing to see our avatars dance to “Might Just!”
── "Might Just" will appear as the opening theme in the upcoming anime series, The Girl Downstairs, based on the popular Korean webtoon of the same name. Were any of you fans of the original source material or ended up reading it after learning that your song would be the OP?
AGNES: That was such an amazing surprise when we heard that news! We felt super grateful to hear that they wanted to use our song. I immediately looked up the anime because I didn’t know much about it, but the story and characters made me super excited!
ASAMI: We were all so surprised and honored that our debut single was going to be used, especially in an anime! LARISSA was a fan of the series - I remember she was very hyped, and I watched the series right after we got the news!
LARISSA: I had watched Doona on Netflix right when it came out, so I was so excited that our debut single is now the Opening Theme song for The Girl Downstairs anime! Since I already knew the story, it was amazing to see the first trailer with “Might Just” in it! I got so excited explaining it to AGNES and ASAMI.
── Each one of you comes from a completely different background: ASAMI is Japanese, AGNES is Dutch and West African, and LARISSA hails from the Netherlands. You are truly a global girl group! Do you think that coming from a wide variety of cultures yourselves helps your music resonate with a larger international audience?
AGNES: Definitely! I think it really helps. Cultures around the world are getting introduced to each other more and more, which is beautiful to see! I also see more and more friend groups with so many different cultures and honestly, that’s us too! We’re friends who share a dream, and I’m sure we’re not the only ones, so hopefully, we can relate to many other girls and friend groups!
ASAMI: Definitely yes! We are all from different countries, but we also have very different personalities. We also grew up listening to varieties of music so I believe our music is influenced from different cultures. All our voices are different so I hope that would interest the listeners.
LARISSA: We definitely bring all of our backgrounds together in this group, and hopefully, everyone can see that and hear it in our music. Through our songs, performances, interviews and even meeting people, we hope to reach as many people as possible and just simply make them happy!
── While you hadn't officially debuted yet, SWEET REVENGE got quite a few live show opportunities in 2023, including on stage at The 20th Tokyo International Music Market (20thTIMM)/MATSURI~ as well as being an opening act for the GENERATIONS LIVE TOUR 2023' THE BEST- how did it feel to perform in front of a large crowd like that together as a group?
AGNES: Like a dream come true! Both were very emotional and exciting moments because it was the first time we performed our songs and everything we had been working on for so long together. It felt so empowering to be on those stages together. We have so much passion and love for this group and our music so being able to finally share that was truly the best feeling. We already can’t wait to be on the stage again!
ASAMI: Thankfully, our company LDH has very successful artists, especially in Japan. Since there’s already a fan base in their community, there are opportunities that we are able to receive. TIMM and the Generations opening was one of these opportunities, and it was INSANE! Performing in front of huge crowds before our debut was such a precious experience, and it only reassured me that I want to do this more!!
LARISSA: From the first moment we stood on stage I fell in love with it! It felt so natural and amazing with the three of us. I feel so lucky that I get to share that stage with ASAMI and AGNES! We worked really hard for those performances, but then it’s over in a second… but it’s the best second of my life! I can’t wait to start performing again soon.
── When you finally have your very own tour someday, what cities are you looking forward to visiting and why?
AGNES: Honestly, I can’t choose! There are so many cities I still want to visit and people I want to meet. My biggest dream for SWEET REVENGE is doing a world tour!
ASAMI: The USA is definitely a place I want to perform because I want to experience how the crowd is and also because that’s where all the artists get the most exposure. But my main dream is to perform at Tokyo Dome one day because that’s where I went to watch my favorite artists from a young age, and I would love my family to be in the audience!!
LARISSA: I would love to visit as many cities as we can and meet as many people as possible! But my number one city would be Amsterdam because it would be so special to perform for my family and friends! I’ll probably cry the whole show *laughs*
── As we wrap things up, is there anything you'd like to say to Genius Japan readers and your international fans?
AGNES: Thank you so much for reading all the way through if you’re still reading! We are so excited to take you on this journey together with us. Let’s show the world some SWEET REVENGE!
ASAMI: Thank you so much always for your support!
LARISSA: I hope that listening to "Might Just" and watching our music video will make you happy and excited! We will do our best to become artists that you want to support and follow!
